One of the largest gaps we’ve noticed in the refugee community since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic was the educational gaps that refugee youth face. Most students have been struggling to attend online classes due to the difficult online school platform and language barriers. This puts these students almost one year behind in their studies.

To combat this issue, US Together staff has been working hard to create and run our Remote Learning Mentoring Program. Currently we have nearly 40 volunteers mentoring refugee youth on how to navigate remote learning. Often when technology continues to be an issue, mentors work to fill in the educational gaps by practicing English and other subjects with the young students.

As we transition out of online learning into a hybrid/in-person format, US Together is putting together a more robust and holistic mentoring program for refugee youth that will kick-start in the Summer of 2021! Mentors in our program will still be supporting our students academically, however we will be adding fun and educational activities and field trips for these students so they can learn, build life skills, and socialize with others in an exciting way. Some of these trips will be to various Cleveland museums, college campuses and different parks where there will be activities such as an art class or classes on college prep, financial literacy and more!

We will be raising funds to support this program, and each donation will go towards transportation, entrance fees, supplies, food and more.

Over the next couple of months, we will be sharing stories from staff, volunteers and students in our mentoring program that we hope will inspire you to join our cause and support the refugee youth in our community.
